The Bhutan national football team represents the Kingdom of Bhutan in international football and is controlled by the Bhutan Football Federation. The team made their international debut in 1982 and has since then participated in various international tournaments including the South Asian Games and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup.
The team has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup or the AFC Asian Cup. In fact, until recently, they had never won an international match. But in 2015, the team achieved a historic 2-1 victory against Sri Lanka in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Bhutan national football team is known for their unique ranking system called the “Bhutan Index” that takes into account factors such as players’ skill, fitness, discipline, and even their personal hygiene. The team is also known for their traditional attire which they wear during official events and matches. The attire includes a Gho (a knee-length robe) for the players and a Kira (a wrap-around skirt) for the officials.
As of August 2021, the Bhutan national football team is ranked 191st in the FIFA world rankings. The team is currently coached by Thimphu FC head coach Dinesh Singh and their captain is Chencho Gyeltshen, who is also their all-time leading scorer.
